Weak Ankles
Ankle pain and weak ankles are most commonly due to an ankle sprain. An ankle sprain is the stretching and tearing of ligaments that surround the ankle. Sprained ligaments swell rapidly and are painful. There are many treatments for ankle sprains. For minor ankle sprains and ankle pain, ankle braces or ankle supports can be used to not only treat the ankle sprain by immobilizing the ankle but will help to prevent future ankle sprains and chronic ankle pain. DrTodds.com also carries foot care products such as pain relieving gels for treating acute ankle pain as well as orthotic arch supports and heel cups which can help prevent chronic ankle pain. Immobilization, rest, ice and elevation are also typically recommended along with physical therapy. The sooner treatment starts for a sprained ankle, the greater chance to prevent long term ankle pain and instability. If you heard a popping sound at the time of the injury, have a fever or are not improving within a couple of days, seek medical treatment because inadequate or delayed treatment may cause long-term joint instability or chronic ankle pain.
