Bunion Pads & Splints
Bunions are a common problem that most people experience as a bony protrusion at the base of the big toe. When a patient has a bunion, the big toe moves in toward the other toes. Bunions are most common in women, and the cause is usually due to improper fitting footwear. There is also a genetic predisposition to developing bunions. As the bunion worsens over time, there may be inflammation over the bunion area causing pain when wearing shoes and when walking. The big toe may eventually come to lie over or under, the second toe. This may cause further irritation while wearing shoes and cause more pain. The second toe may then form a hammertoe. Conservative treatment is generally recommended first and this consists of comfortable shoes with a wider toe box, orthotics, moleskin and bunion pads or cushions.
